Project Torpedalo is a charity event like no other. Two Bentley employees, Mike Sayer and Mark Byass have set themselves a massive challenge to design and construct, from scratch, a self-sufficient carbon fibre pedal-powered boat. In December 2011, they’ll climb aboard the boat in the harbour of La Gomera in the Canary Isles, and pedal it 3000 miles west to Antigua. They will pilot the boat as part of the Woodvale Challenge, a trans-Atlantic rowing race involving roughly 30 rowing boats that takes place every two years – and the two will hope to be the first crew ever to compete in a pedalo. A pedalo has only ever made this journey once before, in 1994, taking 111 days. The target is to complete the crossing in 38 days – if successful, Mike and Mark will set a new World Record.
With all their hard work Mike and Mark are aim to raise a target of £250,000 for two charities – the MND Association and Make-A-Wish.
John Burn are pleased to announce their support for the project as official sponsors to the team. We will provide materials and technical support to the team during the design and build part of the project.
We hope to have regular updates about the project and how we are helping the team to achieve their extremely worthy goal.
